Laptop Keyboard troubles?!? In October 2006, my mum and dad bought me a new laptop as my dad wanted the one I already had. It is a Gateway MX8716b and was bought from Tesco. It was exclusive to Tesco and the 17 inch screen and memory is exactly the right amount for me. However, I had the laptop for 7 months before it had to be sent to Germany under warranty as the 'O' key had broken off and would not reattach. It came back after 3 days and was ok but on Friday, the 'P' key came off and a very small piece of the retainer has broken off. I don't want to tell my dad that it is broken because I am worried about how he will react. I am fed up with the problems now and I am seriously considering just leaving the laptop and buying a PC. I read some reviews on the internet about the laptop and many have commented on the keyboard. (http://www.iwr.co.uk/personal-computer-world/hardware/2196391/review-gateway-mx8716b-notebook). Would I be better to show my dad these reviews? I am worried about what he will say. Also, would it be worth the money to replace the keyboard? Thanks in advance for the help
Can someone help me translate from Korean? I'm researching a notebook computer and the only reviews are in.. ...Korean. I've included the gobbledygook translation I got from an internet translator. Thank you! About low of 12.1 inch product and comparison the height pitch was not is not narrow to that extent and neither the [lay] [su] [thu] which it sells felt comparison to doing the tie ping because wide is inconvenient. (The case carrying frost of the mini notebook below 10 inches only is not becoming optimization the keyboard is born to be small the memory where the nerve it is used the tie ping highly that it does. This product low me in the biggest strong point the height pad where the quick tie ping is possible was thought will not be all.)
Will My Notebook Be Compatible With The Sims 3? I have a HP Pavilion dv9917cl Notebook PC. It's kind of new, and is my first private computer really, the one I used to use was from 2000 and was a family computer. This one is for college really, but I am a Sims fanatic. I have Windows Vista which I have been hearing mixed reviews about too. This is what I got off of the HP website: Product Name dv9917cl Product Number FE699UA#ABA Microprocessor 2.10 GHz AMD Turion X2 TL-62 Dual-Core Mobile Processor Microprocessor Cache 512 KB + 512 KB L2 Cache Memory 3072 MB Memory Max Up to 4GB DDR2 (Up to 1 GB may not be available due to 32-bit operating system resource requirements) Video Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7150M Video Memory Up to 1071 MB Hard Drive 250 GB (5400 rpm) Multimedia Drive LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support Display 17.0" WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1440 x 900) Display Fax/Modem High speed 56K modem Network Card Integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN Wireless Connectivity Wireless LAN 802.11b/g Sound Altec Lansing speakers Keyboard 101-key compatible Pointing Device Touch Pad with dedicated vertical and horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad PC Card Slots One ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34) External Ports 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards 4 Universal Serial Bus USB 2.0 1 VGA (15-pin) 1 RJ-11 (modem) 1 TV-Out (S-video) 1 RJ -45 (LAN) 2 headphone-out 1 microphone-in 1 notebook expansion port 3 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin) 1 Consumer IR Dimensions 15.16 (L) X 11.22" (W) X 1.65"(H) Weight 7.7lbs Security Kensington MicroSaver lock slot Power-on password Accepts 3rd party security lock devices Power 65 W AC Adapter 8-cell Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) What's In The Box HP Pavilion WebCam with stereo Integrated Microphones Mobile Stereo Earbud Headphones (1 pair) HP Mobile Remote Control Well I have a pretty good idea of what some of that stuff is, but some of it went over my head. When I first got the Sims 2, my family's computer did not have enough of a graphics card? I believe that was it, and it was rather expensive to buy one. I'd really appreciate any help you can offer on this, I have been waiting for a long time for The Sims 3 to be released, and not since the requirements were posted on the site, I've been totally freaking out. Thanks!!
Will this laptop be good for the next four to five years or will it become obsolete? Please review specs.? I plan on using it for general purposes along with a couple of engineering software (HyperMesh, etc.). Also, I will be using it to watch movies, listen to music and occasionally play a few games. Does anyone use a netbook/notebook to write on? I'm not sure whether to go for small and light or big with? ..all the normal features, plus a DVD drive etc etc. The only thing I'm worried about is that most netbooks don't seem to come with Microsoft office installed, and I've seen lots of reviews saying the keyboards are too small. Thoughts? Thanks! Would like to point out I'm trying to make electronic copies of all of my handwritten writing, but not wanting to have to 'borrow' (take over) my bf's laptop all the time it may be better to get a laptop for a bit more money over the lightweight portable pros of a netbook? If you own a good notebook could you say which one? I'm having trouble deciphering all the many different specifications into ones that wil actually benefit me, and having worked in sales don't trust the local "PC world" employees to give me an honest answer! :p

Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy. REVIEW BY: Rick M. Reviewed Aug 07, 2008 I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY REVIEW BY: fraqtured Reviewed Aug 06, 2008 i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion. REVIEW BY: Reviewed Aug 05, 2008 This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I'm very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don't mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I'd definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price! Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard's configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip. The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video. What can you do about this? You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities. The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it's maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features. Click Here for our Memory Options » Click Here for the latest Video Cards » How Much Memory Do You Really Have? When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory. But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform . Acer TravelMate 7320 - anyone ever own one? The Acer TravelMate 7320-302G16Mi Intel Celeron M560 2.13Ghz Notebook, to be more precise. I've found it for a very good price, but the web seems lacking in reviews. I was wondering if anybody else out there had much experience with it. I'm no gamer, but I am online a lot and run quite a few programs concurrently, so would appreciate it if my machine had a bit of oomph. The one review I did find (in German) said, as far as I could make out, that the keyboard was a bit dodgy. Cheers, from Stompnose
HP Pavilion DV9933ct can I change the plastic housing of my laptop? So i bought this new laptop, and the casing has a cheap plastic bottom. The monitor and keyboard casing is glossy and nice, but I read some reviews that this laptop has overheating problem. Possibly because of the cheap plastic casing on the bottom where all the components are? Could I replace the casing with an aluminum sort of thing for better heat dispersment?? Just for the bottom side. I am looking for a notebook cooler as well, but this plastic thing really bugs me. I used to have a Powerbook before this, and I have to say Apple products are well engineered and worth every penny.

Suggestions for Back to School Computer? Hello, I will be going back to my University at the end of Sept. (UC Davis) and was wondering if I could get a suggestion for a back to school laptop under $700 (not including tax and warranty). This what I am going for right now: HP dv5z: Operating system-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit) Processor-AMD Turion(TM) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-82 (2.2GHz) Display-15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050) Memory-FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!! Graphics card-ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics Hard drive-FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive Personalization-Webcam + Fingerprint Reader Keyboard-HP Color Matching Keyboard Networking-802.11a/b/g/n WLAN Modem Port-No High speed 56K modem port Primary CD/DVD drive-LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support TV & entertainment experience-No TV Tuner w/remote control Primary battery-High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery Productivity software-Microsoft(R) Works 9.0 -I was going to replace the RAM with Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-667 PC2-5300 Notebook (SODIMM) Memory after I get the laptop. A couple questions: Is there much of a difference between the 1680x1050 and the 1280x800 ? If there isn't, then I would rather get the 1280x800 with the Brightview Infinity screen. I was also going to get a mini-notebook as a secondary laptop. Which one is better? (The Lenovo S10, HP Mininote, Eee, Dell mini?) I know the Dell mini hasn't come out yet, so I am waiting on that so I can check out all the reviews on that. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Lenovo, but let me know what you guys think. Also, I'm not bent on the HP laptop, but that's just the best thing I've found so far that fits my needs.
How future proof is this laptop. ? I would like to purchase a Alienware Area 51 m15x notebook. The reason is I travel a lot for business and leisure that is capable of playing games at at-least medium settings. My question is, how future proof is this laptop (any guesstimates on how long it will be able to play games with ease in the future, and how long will it last overall). I understand that there are no exact answers, guesstimates are what I seek. Here are the specs I plan on purchasing Warranty: 3-Year AlienCare Onsite Service and 24/7 Toll-Free Phone Support Design & Display: Silver Ripley Design Display: 15.4" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD (1200p) System Lighting: Alienware® AlienFX® System Lighting - Blue Video/Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® Series - 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GT Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB) Operating System (Office software not included): Windows Vista® Home Premium with Service Pack 1 Notebook Tuners and Remotes: Without Media Center Remote Control or TV Tuner Memory: 4GB« Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 2048MB System Drive: 320GB 7,200RPM (16MB Cache) w/ Free Fall Protection Optical Drives : 8x Dual Layer Burner (DVD±RW, CD-RW) w/ LightScribe Technology - View Demo Wireless: Internal Intel® Wireless 4965 a/b/g/Draft-N Mini-Card Sound Card : Internal High-Definition Audio with surround sound Keyboard Options: AlienFX® Illuminated Keyboard – Exclusive Design AlienRespawn: AlienRespawn v2.0 Recovery DVD – Windows Vista® Edition Is this good enough, I have read many reviews stating this is the most powerful laptop available now. Aditional Question: Is the Nvidia 9800M (notice the M) equvilent to the 9800 GT for desktops? Will it play games such as the upcoming The Sims 3 that recommend 9800 M ?

I was thinkin about becoming an actor or musician? First off I just want to start out saying that I realize that this is no easy goal or task to complete. I know it can be quite a long journey, but I'm 16, I think that journey will be enough time. And I know what you're thinking, "well he's foolish and young, he'll change his mind and pick another career." You're probably right, but for the time being, this is what I want to do. So what got me motivated was the fact of being able to work with some of my idles whether being in the fields of music or in the fields of theater. I haven't had a lot of practice with either one, besides auditioning to myself in the mirror and writing lyrics on my computer (I know, really cheezy lol). But I live in columbia, south carolina. I did research and I'm just now finding out that The Notebook and a lot of other good movies were filmed here and I was doing research on what it took to make it as an actor or musician in SC. I found out that I had to have a passion for one and/or the other. I have an extreme passion for music, and I can play the piano, by ear, my voice is okay and I would LIKE to play the guitar. As for acting, I think it would be interesting to me. The most practice I've had with acting is infront of my bathroom mirror. So like I said, I've done some research and I've figured out quite a number of things: Acting 1. Passion- This is easy to me, I Can make myself become physically and emotionally thaylt character, I know that I MUST become the character. 2. Experience- Like I already said, The most experience comes fro the bathroom mirror 3. Charisma- it's very easy for me to get along with someone. 4. Manager- this is somebody who has connections with agencies that could get me known and possibly promote me to bigger and better roles. I've seen a couple of websites that could assign me a manager, that is, if the manager sees something in me 5. Commitment- 9 times out of ten I will never walk out or give up on an opporitunity 6. Confidence- probably my weekest point. I'm probably the most insecure person ANY of you would ever meet in your life. 7. Willingness- well I get freightened when I get in front of an audience or people who I can tell don't see a lot in me, which i figure I'll grow out of. 8. Creativity- If I sit and think hard, I'm extremely creative and a hard thinker. I'm thinkin about saving up and getting a MacBook since they have great reviews and software for photo and video editing. Maybe I can try my hand at YouTube. Location- My teacher told me that Columbia, SC is an excellent place to get discovered because of the simple reason that there isn't a lot of competition, as opposite for places like Cali or York Music Passion- I have about 20 lyrics I've created saved on my computer and I cannot love without my iPod. I think I have an alright voice and with lessons, I would be a great pianist. What music means to me- There is no answer because different music strikes different cords. Experience- I practice singing everyday and try to record it onto my iPod and play it back often. I play the piano keyboard by ear very well by ear but would like to learn how to read it as well. Guitars interest me too; I love the sound. Manager- same as acting Commitment- Im not very confident about my voice or my piano skills, I get very scared in front of crowds. When I get the age, i could start performing at bars and night clubs to help put myself out there Willingness- I'm NOT willing to stand in front of an audience and sit there and sing and play an instrument, at least not until I get more practice on both Creativity- I'm creative whe it comes to music as well, when I get the MacBook, I could use garage band to actually start making music and demos and putting songs on YouTube to let people hear. I think I'll start out woth YouTube first though and let the Internet crowds judge my music first Location- Sam as acting My questions are Do you think I have a shot at at either? Which one do you think I'd be better at? Do you have anymore tips? Should I go for these kinds of things? Tell me more please!!!! Thank you all

I want a new laptop. Which is better option? ? I posted earlier a question between a Gateway and an HP. The HP was the most voted. Another told me of his opinion of Toshiba and the website, newegg.com. I did not like the reviews I read of Toshibas, but I did look into the website.
